The PGA Championship
7:26 PMI've always watched golf with my dad since I was a little girl and this week I'm #blessed to say that I had the opportunity to go to the PGA Championship this week at Baltusrol, in Springfield, NJ. The last time the championship was here I was only about 10 years old and my family was vacationing in South Carolina at the time. We watched as Springfield was on TV. I pass Baltusrol every time I head down to my grandma's house and I've always wondered what it looks like behind the gates.
Lynette, my sorority sister, very good friend, and fellow gold enthusiast volunteered at the tournament all week and had some free passes to go. I headed over to Baltusrol on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday for my PGA adventure.
There's been some crazy heat this week. Even though I slathered my skin in SPF, I still got a wee bit burnt on my shoulders. My makeup also slid right off my face so I stuck to eyeliner and concealer, keeping it fresh and basic. It was grueling walking around in the heat of the day but 100% worth it.
One of the biggest concerns was what to wear. I wanted to look nice since Baltusrol is a classy place but also wanted to stay cool.
Monday's outfit was inspired by Sarah Vickers AKA Classy Girls Wear Pearls, and her outfit she wore to the Masters in Augusta, Georgia. With some modifications I think I got the look. It was so hot on Monday that I quickly ditched my straw hat for a more comfy and ponytail safe PGA baseball cap. I got it monogrammed of course. The baseball cap became my go to hat for the rest of the week and I fit right in with all my fellow spectators.
Monday's practice round, Lynette and I followed Jordan Speith around a little bit and generally tired to figure out the layout of the golf course. After wandering around, we were walking along the vendors and noticed a crowd by the Mercedes tent. Rickie Fowler and actor Anthony Anderson were filming a skit inside. We watched for a while and while Rickie doesn't seem to give out autographs to adults ( even though I look like I'm 12 with all these rubber bands on my teeth) Anthony Anderson took selfies and gave autographs to everyone watching.
Tuesday I felt a bit more prepared for the day. I knew what to expect from the elements and I opted to wear my Lilly Pulitzer Shorts and a sleeveless scalloped white top. I ditched my keds for my good ole white converse. My keds had given me blisters and I know from walking miles in England with my converse they could do me no wrong. It seemed like it was National Wear Your Lilly Day at the course. So many ladies were decked out in their Lilly dresses, tops, or shorts. I fit right it. Lynette and I lucked out at hole 11. We got a up close view of Jordan Speith and Phil Mickelson playing together. Sergio Garcia signed some autographs, I got KJ Choi's golf ball, and our two favorites Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler were playing together. How perfect was that! Later that day Patrick Reed signed my ticket!
Friday is when the real contest began. Lynette and I got over to a very rainy Baltusrol at around 8am. I wore a very light button up sleeveless shirt dress and boy was I happy to be wearing it later that day. The sky cleared up and the sun beat down on the very damp golf course. To be honest it smelled a little funky but you have to give major props to the maintenance crew at Baltusrol for keeping all the greens and the entire property in working order for the entire championship. Lynette and I got to see our sorority's adviser too and hang out with her and her family. They had driven 3 hours to come see the action. It definitely made me grateful to live only 10 minutes away. I also got the chance to meet up with my real sister and some people from her office.
The PGA championship stole my heart, but that gift shop stole my money. Totally worth it though. On top of the gifts I got for my boyfriend, little, and parents, I got myself my hat and a really cute long sleeved shirt with a big old New Jersey and the Wanamaker trophy on the back. It is super soft and I can't wait to wear it. I found it quite by accident in the men's section and honestly it is more of a unisex t shirt that anyone could wear rather then a manly man's shirt.
I'm so happy to have had this experience and right in my own backyard. The next time the championship will be in my area will be in 2022 at Trump National in Bedminsiter so I have a while until my next championship and I won't be a young spring chicken anymore! Who knows, maybe I'll become a golf groupie and travel all around to watch tournaments. Only time will tell!
